		<description>About

Anton Shebetko (he/him) is a Ukrainian artist, photographer, curator, and writer from Kyiv who currently lives in Amsterdam. His works focus on the issues facing the LGBTQIA+ community in Ukraine, themes of memory, loss of identity, multiplicity of history, and the role that photography and archival materials can play in revealing these stories. Most of his research is devoted to the forgotten queer history of Ukraine; part of it was recently published in his book "A Very Brief and Subjective Queer History of Ukraine". His work has been exhibited at the FOAM Museum in Amsterdam, Netherlands; Schwules Museum and&#38;nbsp; nGbK am Alex in Berlin, Germany; Q21 Exhibition Space in Vienna, Austria; Photo Elysée in Lausanne, Switzerland; CENTQUATRE-PARIS in Paris, France; BWA Studio in Wroclaw, Poland; Württembergischer Kunstverein in Stuttgart, Germany; and PinchukArtCentre and Mystetskyi Arsenal in Kyiv, Ukraine. He participated in Kyiv Biennial in 2023 and was a nominee for PinchukArtPrize in 2025. He curated exhibitions and film programs for Schwules Museum, Melkweg Expo and WORM Rotterdam. He was a recipient of the RM Residency Award and the Where Love Is Illegal Fellowship.&#38;nbsp;He gave talks and lectures at Maastricht University, Gerrit Rietveld Academie, and Between Bridges Gallery. Tryouts
	2025
Photo on aluminium, OSB"Tryouts" is a series of large-format photographs depicting homoerotic Soviet-era propagandist monuments that were either destroyed during the decommunization process or are now inaccessible.
Each photograph is partially obscured by OSB panels with cutouts inspired by the works of Kazimir Malevich—an artist whose legacy has been successfully reappropriated into the national narrative of Ukraine. These cutouts highlight the homoerotic elements of the sculptures while rendering their Soviet propaganda aspects invisible to the viewer.
By reframing these monuments through a queer lens, Tryouts challenges dominant historical narratives and explores the potential for alternative perspectives in the reading of history.

The presence or absence of queerness in Ukrainian culture remains a subject of speculation in Ukrainian society. Though rarely explicit, queerness has existed in subtle, coded forms within the works and correspondence of Ukrainian artists and writers.

 The silkscreen series Dear Sons and Daughters of Ukraine presents portraits of scientists, artists, and political figures linked to Ukraine – whether through their origins or their contributions to the national canon. Their names are woven into the national narrative and often used to construct the collective myth of a nation. Yet the queer dimensions of their biographies are systematically silenced and erased.
The portraits in series are
printed white on white using the silkscreen printing technique that emphasizes how the non-heteronormative aspects of their biographies are invisible and inconvenient for propaganda, demonstrating the complexity of their identities.
This ironic duality – being both present and absent – reflects a broader pattern: Ukrainian culture itself has often been rendered invisible, either dismissed or reframed through an imperial lens, with some of its most prominent figures appropriated and claimed as representatives of other nations.

The project is complemented by the library of research materials: biographies, diaries, documentaries, and tabloids. It invites the viewers to immerse themselves in the context, do their own research, and find their own answers.

A Very Brief and Subjective Queer History of Ukraine
2022

publication&#38;nbsp;

This publication is an attempt to tell the story of Ukrainian queer community through a series of interviews with members of the community, researchers and artists. Even though it's written in a chronological order, this is a subjective attempt and does not intend to be the only correct reading of history or a 100% truthful reflection of the ideas expressed in it.
The publication begins with a timeline, which spells out the main dates for the Ukrainian LGBTQ+ movement. The following chapters are 6 sections of 8 interviews, each beginning with a short introduction essay. The interviews cover the period from modernism to the present day. As an addition to the text, the publication includes visual research made in the last 5 years.&#38;nbsp;

Simeiz2021-ongoing

photo, video

Simeiz is a small village on the southern coast of Crimea which is temporarily occupied by Russia. In the Soviet era, an underground gay resort arose in the village. It started with a small nudist beach; a popular bar and night club, Hedgehogs, appeared later in independent Ukraine. From the 1990s on, Simeiz&#38;nbsp;became a significant meeting point for members of the LGBTQ+ community from Ukraine, Belarus and Russia. Every year, about 4,000 people visited the place before the&#38;nbsp;temporary&#38;nbsp;occupation of Crimea by Russia in 2014. At the moment,&#38;nbsp;Simeiz, as a gay resort, is threatened with disappearance due to the homophobic laws of the Russian Federation. If this happens, old photos and videos will be the only evidence of its existence and extinction.
Special thanks to Zhanna Simeiz, activist, political drag queen and creator of Hedgehogs club for sharing and narrating her story.

We Were Here2018
Photo, video, audio, print on textile

We Were Here is a series of works depicting real LGBTQIA+ veterans of the war in the region of Donbas and was created in 2018. The series plays on the dual camouflage its heroes must wear: one in the army and the other in civilian life. After participating in this project, veteran Viktor Pylypenko established the organization “Ukrainian LGBT+ Military and Veterans for Equal Rights,” which, before the full-scale invasion, had about 130 members. At the moment, the organization has more than 600 members, most of whom are currently engaged in armed combat.The organization brings together queer individuals in the Ukrainian army, openly advocating for their acceptance and working to shift societal perceptions in a positive direction, despite existing homophobia. Initially spread through word of mouth, the organization is now well-known and accessible through a verified entry process.The project was implemented within the "Coming Out of Isolation: Through Art to Visibility" art residency organized by IZOLYATSIA and KYIVPRIDE NGO with the support of the EVZ Foundation.

To Know Us Better
2022-ongoing

photo, text&#38;nbsp;

For many years I have been working with the Ukrainian LGBTQ community, its history, and its coexistence with a mostly homophobic and conservative Ukrainian society. In most of my projects the anonymity of the participants was a key requirement due to the inability to predict the consequences of a public coming out. However, in the few years that I have lived outside of Ukraine, there have been significant changes in society. Large-scale equality marches began to take place, safe spaces were opened across the country, positive media coverage, and hope for hate crime laws emerged. These were small but very important steps for the Ukrainian queer community. Yes, homophobia and transphobia are still quite common in all walks of life, but the queer community have embarked on a path to combat it — and are doing so successfully in many ways, including through their visibility.

When I first started working on this project, I planned to go to Ukraine to take portraits of open Ukrainian queers. Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine has changed the lives of all Ukrainians, not just the queer community. Tens of thousands of Ukrainians have died at the hands of Russian invaders. More than 14 million Ukrainians have been forced to flee their homes. Of course, there are representatives of the queer community among them. It was their portraits and stories that became the basis of this project. I shot it in the Netherlands, Germany, Poland and Spain. Some of the participants were in Europe long before February 24. The war started 8 years ago, and that is why I included queers from the temporarily occupied Crimea and Donbas in the project.

I believe that those who participated in my project will be able to return to a free and safe Ukraine, a Ukraine that will survive and win. And I believe that they will not only be able to maintain all the progress we have all made over the last few years, but also accelerate it. The Ukraine of the future is a country in which human rights, inclusiveness, respect and belief in democratic values are not empty words.

	Proposal for the statue of Billy Herrington for the city of Odesa
	2025
BronzeA small bronze sculpture portrays American gay porn actor Billy Herrington, who later in his life became known worldwide as a meme. Billy himself appreciated such status and frequently visited meme-related conventions and expos.

In July 2022, amidst the Russian invasion of Ukraine, a petition to the President of Ukraine regarding the replacement of the Monument to Empress Catherine the Great with a monument to Billy Herrington received more than 25,000 votes. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded to the petition and asked the Odesa City Council to discuss the demolition of the monument. Subsequently, the statue of Catherine and several other monuments tied to imperial and Soviet legacies were taken down.

The original petition presented itself as a humorous call to combat imperial and colonial symbols in Ukrainian public spaces. At the same time, it also relied on a joke that framed Herrington’s image through a homophobic lens. The original concept drew from a popular meme image, reducing Herrington to a caricature.

On the contrary, this sculpture responds by taking the proposal seriously and making a work that idealizes Herrington. It arose as a counteraction to acts of homophobia and the appropriation of anti-colonial rhetoric.

It's not your problem
2022neon

Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine took place on February 24, 2022. During this time, more than 9,000 people died, not counting tens of thousands in the occupied territories. Overly 12 million people have been forced to flee their homes. In fact, the Russian-Ukrainian war began 8 years ago with the occupation of Crimea and the invasion of Donbas, which is often forgotten.

Every war has irreversible consequences on many levels, and above all on human life. The war that is taking place several thousand kilometers away seems alien. Distance affects the experience of war, attitudes towards it and even awareness and interest. Nevertheless, large-scale wars always lead to severe social, economic and political consequences, which are felt not only in the countries directly involved in the wars.

The Pride Camouflage Flag
2024print on a flag cloth

In many nations, true progress toward LGBTQIA+ rights remains elusive, with queer individuals still facing criminalization for their identities. At the same time, in the countries of "west world" that present themselves as safe havens for LGBTQIA+ people, regression is occurring, as highlighted by numerous human rights organizations.The Pride&#38;nbsp;Camouflage&#38;nbsp;Flag reimagining the Progress&#38;nbsp;Pride&#38;nbsp;Flag, one of the newest iterations of the rainbow flag tradition embraced by the queer community. Ambiguous symbolism of&#38;nbsp;camouflaging&#38;nbsp;of queer identity arises from the fusion of conflicting concepts: while the notion of "camouflage" typically connotes concealment, the flag's vibrant appearance serves as a rallying cry for unity and the imperative to openly assert their rights through visibility and advocacy.The flag draws inspiration from the presence of queer individuals in the Ukrainian army, who are simultaneously combating Russia's aggression and advocating for equal rights within Ukraine.
